If you love all things under the sea (besides Sebastian the Crab) you’ll be particularly taken aback with the exquisite debut exhibition now showing at kind of – gallery, which happens to be a perfect conglomerate of four genius beings by the names of Adrian Tezjan, Daniel Farrell, Joshua Heath and Wing Lau. The dark side of nature dazzles like a diamond in the rough in the Deep Sea X New Moon exhibition, the first for the gallery, described as “A subaquatic expedition by Joel & Candice Cameron”. But you need to be speedy since it closes this Sunday 15th April at 5pm.

You can find this gem in the rough of Darlinghurst, at 118 Oxford Street in the kind of – gallery. To check out their website head to www.kindofgallery.com.

Attention all Converse fans, your time has more than likely come with the unveiling of the mammoth boutique by the brand, on the West Coast of America, in Santa Monica, California. In true U.S. fashion, the store is 70,000 square feet and features the broadest assortment of Converse in the world.

That’s all fine and dandy but if you can’t afford a ticket over, why am I telling you all of this? Well you can feel the embrace of Converse on your own footsies at the hands of Gorillaz co-creator and designer Jamie Hewlett, who has crafted a few select prints for us right here in Australia.

Launching it’s very own campaign dubbed Do Ya Thing, the creations meld with the band’s artwork from their self-titled album, chock full of military inspiration. Original design composes and maintains Converse’s signature qualities of simplicity and ease of aesthetics, their pure and classic styling feeds the cool-edge hipster who doesn’t want a sneaker that screams for attention.

Like true women do, the Fawn team love browsing high-end boutiques with as much excitement and vigour as a kid in a toy store. But sometimes we all need a little down-to-earth retail therapy. For the more outdoor-inspired soul surf sisters you’ll be stoked to know that the dazzling new star in Byron Bay’s shopping precinct is VSTR, pronounced “visitor”, a surf boutique created for the intelligent and savvy breed of dedicated surfers who stopped wearing mainstream surf labels years ago. You know those shameless promoters who took every inch of cheap fabric possible to spruik a name? You’ve probably buried it deep in your mind, and now that you think about it, it annoys you endlessly.

Find relief in VSTR.

Their style is upmarket-casual with a barely visible logo but it is in fact unexpectedly created by mainstream surfer Kelly Slater, and sponsored by global brand Quiksilver, along with their head designer, Simon Buttonshaw. Although it is a different mentality to Quiksilver Slater says – there is no ‘filter’ to ensure their products appeal to the widest possible market.

In comparison, across the Pacific, Thalia surf store at Laguna Beach in Los Angeles is in a similar situation to VSTR, but for a slightly different reason. When it opened 10 years ago, the neighbouring surf shops pressured the big labels not to supply stock to Thalia, arguing that competition was intense enough already. This forced the store’s owners to think outside the box, says manager Corey Brindley.

“We started finding local artists, reaching out to them and saying, ‘Hey, let’s come up with something different let’s celebrate the art side of surfing, as opposed to the graphic design side.’ From there we were able to discover there is this whole other side of surfing that isn’t part of the big industry, that isn’t just a logo on a T-shirt. I wouldn’t say the big labels have lost touch with the roots of surfing, but maybe they’ve gone away from what it’s all about, making clothes for surfers. Now they’re making clothes for the masses.”

Quiksilver’s Australian manager of emerging brands, Scott Peacock, says these pro-surfer side projects are simply an opportunity for them to exercise creativity.“Kelly doesn’t get the opportunity to deliver creativity in the Quiksilver world,” he says. “But he can deliver creativity in the VSTR world in the way that he would like to do it.” And that’s how you do it.

VSTR Byron Bay
15 Lawson Street,
Byron Bay NSW

If you’re a bit too far away to meet VSTR in person, their website is the perfect alternative at vstr.com with surfing vids, inspiring photography, interviews with surfers and the stories of those who have helped Slater make VSTR.
